Is our Universe user-friendly? Not obviously, for it is big and old and dark and cold. So it is easy for anyone who stares up into the night sky to feel insignificant. After all we are about six feet tall in a Universe which is seventy thousand billion, billion miles across. Is genetic engineering a good or bad thing? The new technology certainly allows vast changes in the fabric of life by altering the genes. Genes are the information blueprint that is passed on from one generation to the next. They code for particular proteins specific to the form of life. Recent claims to have identified a gene for tallness invited the question: What next? Are we to expect a constant stream of announcements as one human characteristic after another is traced back to its genetic origins, and what we think of as our humanity is revealed in all its starkness as complex chemistry? It is obvious that the enormous resources now being put into genetic research will tell us a lot more about ourselves.
