Gavin studied Physics with Astrophysics (Exeter 2003) before obtaining a PgDip in Physics (Photonics and Optoelectronic Devices) at St. Andrews and Heriot-Watt universities. He then spent his research career working across the biological and biomedical sciences at both the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow which included a PhD in functional brain imaging (2014) before moving into roles in university administration. His particular area of research was in the use of magnetic resonance imaging techniques to study animal models of disease and in primary research of novel subjects such as  live invertebrates and fish.

During this time he also developed a strong interest in the interfaces of science with society and religion, as well as public engagement with academia.

He is especially interested in the theological implications of new scientific discoveries and technological innovations on the life and practices of the Christian church. Currently his main interest in this regard is with potential new forms of intelligent and self-aware life such as extra-terrestrial or artificial intelligences.
